What is the Critique Feature and how do I use it?

The Critique system on DeviantArt is designed to help artists get in-depth, critical feedback and commentary on their work. Valued feedback through Critique promotes creative growth as an artist and draws special attention to your work. Critiques are also a way for committed art enthusiasts, connoisseurs and fans to publish real criticism, gain recognition as a Critic and introduce new and emerging art to the community.

The Critique system co-exists with the original comments system but provides a space that is designed for considered, thoughtful and RESPECTFUL criticism. No modifications have been made to the comments system on DeviantArt and it will continue to work as before.

Only Core Members are able to request Critiques on their Deviations, though any member may give a Critique. Click here to learn more about Core Membership and your participation in Critique.

How to request Critique on your Deviation:

Any Core Member can opt-in to receive criticism when submitting a Deviation. Critiques can be enabled anytime after submission by editing your Deviation to request Critiques. When selecting Critiques, a prominent notification will appear on the Deviation page informing Deviants that you would like to receive Critiques on your work. If you request Critiques when you submit a new Deviation, your watchers will also be notified that you have requested Critique within their Message Centers.

To disable a request for Critiques on a Deviation, unselect the "Request Critiques" checkbox on the Deviation editing page. Previously submitted Critiques will remain on the Deviation page, but the request for new Critiques will no longer appear and new Critiques cannot be posted.

Receiving a Critique on a Deviation:

When a Deviant Critiques one of your Deviations, you will be notified in the Feedback section of your Message Center. The Critique does not get posted to your Deviation page until you acknowledge the Critique through a response in the Message Center. You must respond to a Critique or it will remain in your Message Center.

Responding to a Critique on a Deviation:

When you receive a Critique you respond by marking it as "fair" or "unfair". If you mark a Critique as "Fair" it will immediately get posted to your Deviation page and the Critic and his Watchers will be notified of your approval in their respective Message Centers. If you mark a critique as “Unfair” it will not be posted to your Deviation page and the Critic and his Watchers will be notified of your decision in their respective Message Centers. Only the Critic will be notified as to the reason that you marked the Critique as "Unfair".

When you receive a Critique and mark it as "Unfair" you will be prompted to select a reason among these choices: "Not Constructive", "Useless", "Inflammatory", "Not Objective", "Spam". You must indicate a choice or the Critique will remain in your Message Center.

Please note that writing a Critique takes time and thoughtful effort by a Critic. Although marking a Critique as "Unfair" will not display the Critique on your deviation page, it will still be viewable by a Critic’s watchers and through the Critic’s profile page. Therefore sensitivity should be shown in marking Critiques as “Unfair.”

A Critique is deemed “Fair” or "Unfair" based on the method and effort of the Critic. It is not appropriate to deem a Critique “Fair” or "Unfair" based on either a positive or negative opinion about the artwork itself.

How to give a Critique:

Any memberof DeviantArt can submit Critiques on Deviations where Critique is enabled.

A Critique message, unlike a standard comment, has minimum qualifications in order to be sent to an Artist. A Critique must be a minimum of 100 words in length and the Critic must also submit a 1-5 star rating on each of the following qualities:

Vision

      – Does the artwork present or reflect a point of view, theme or idea?

Originality

      – Is the artwork fresh or new in its style, execution or approach? Is it something you haven’t seen before in its particular genre? Does it surprise you?

Technique

      – Was the artwork skillfully created? Does the artist exhibit advanced knowledge of the medium and/or bring special focus to the craft of the medium used.

Impact

      – Does the artwork resonate with you or evoke strong emotions? Does it make you think? Does it blow your mind?

Deviousness

      – An average rating based on your selections within Vision, Originality, Technique, and Impact.

Critique is designed to be a thorough evaluation of a Deviation on a number of different qualities. It is intentionally designed to inspire thoughtful and constructive feedback from committed Artists and Enthusiasts to fellow Artists requesting meaningful responses to their artwork. DeviantArt encourages a Fair Critique Policy for both Critics and Artists. Critiques are not intended as personal criticisms of behavior, politics or opinions of an Artist and should concentrate only on discussion and an evaluation of the artwork itself.

We have provided some sample Critiques here as examples:

Sample 2

When you submit a Critique, a message will be sent to the Artist and your Critique Watchers. The Critique will also be posted within a Critiques module on your user page. If an Artist marks your Critique as "Fair" the Critique will be displayed on the applicable Deviation page. If your Critique is deemed "Unfair" it will not be visible on the applicable Deviation page. The Critique itself will also display the Artist’s response to the Critique once it is given.

DeviantArt administrators can remove critiques that violate the DeviantArt etiquette policy.

A Critique continues to live on Critic’s profile page even if it is marked "Unfair" and can only be removed from DeviantArt by the Critic. If an Artist deems a Critique unfair, it will be marked as such on the Critique page.

Critic user profile pages:

When you post a Critique to an artwork, a new module will be added to your profile page titled "Critiques". All of your submitted Critiques will browseable and readable from this module. Critiques will always appear in this module even if an Artist deems them as "Unfair" or the corresponding Deviation is removed from DeviantArt. The Artist’s response to the Critique will also be posted to the Critique page accessible through the module. Only a Critic is capable of removing a Critique from DeviantArt through the Edit function on the full Critique page.

Critique Watch:

Upon submission of a Critique, a deviantWATCH message is sent to all of your Critique watchers. The Critique WATCH message is updated on the fly if the artist has deemed your Critique either "Fair" or "Unfair". In addition, all members of DeviantArt are permitted to vote on the Fairness of any Critique.

What happens when my Core Membership expires?:

If your Core Membership expires, you will no longer be able to request until you renew your Core Membership. All previously submitted Critiques will remain visible on Deviation pages and within the Critic’s “Critiques” module.
